UV treatment reduces beach water bacteria

Encinitas, Calif., is home to one of the more popular destinations in San Diego County. Its Moonlight Beach attracted nearly 2.7 million visitors in 2000 and could have hosted more, except that for 93 days that year, the beach was closed or posted because of high bacteria counts. Today, water quality has improved dramatically. The city has one of the most aggressive urban runoff programs in San Diego County.
