Handy devices guide city's maintenance workers

Santa Monica, Calif., has provided its maintenance workers with hand-held computers loaded with the city's GIS. The technology is helping the city save time on producing work requests and work orders, collecting and reconciling field data, and producing activity reports. Maintenance workers in Santa Monica have daily routines that involve removing graffiti; inspecting sidewalks; testing fire hydrants and water valves; and fixing potholes, traffic signs and signals, parking meters and streetlights.
