WATER SUPPLY/California city begins MTBE removal efforts

South Lake Tahoe, Calif., is known for its pristine lake, clean air and pure water. However, that reputation was threatened a few years ago when the city's drinking water was contaminated with the gasoline additive Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE). MTBE has been used as a fuel oxygenate since 1979 to reduce carbon monoxide and ozone levels caused by automobile emissions. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is a potential carcinogen, and it can contaminate groundwater supplies through fuel storage tank and pipeline leaks, spills and stormwater runoff.
